The DAAD promotes the training of specialists from developing and newly industrialised countries through its development-oriented postgraduate study programmes. Local experts who are well-trained and networked with international partners play an important role in their countries' long-term development. They are the best assurance of a brighter future with less poverty, more education, and better health for all. The scholarships provide foreign graduates from developing and newly industrialised countries with at least two years of professional experience with the opportunity to pursue a postgraduate or Master's degree at a German university, and in exceptional cases, a doctoral degree and a university qualification (Master's/PhD) in Germany.
DAAD 2023/2024 Scholarship benefits
- Monthly payments range from 934 euros for graduates to 1,200 euros for doctoral candidates, depending on academic level.
- Health, accident, and insurance coverage
- Unless the expenses are covered by the home country or another source of funding, travel allowance
DAAD Scholarship recipients may be eligible for the following benefits under certain conditions:
- Rent subsidy on a monthly basis
- Monthly allowance for accompanying family members
The funding period ranges from 12 to 42 months (dependent on study programme)
Eligibility Criteria for DAAD Scholarship 2023/2024:
- You must have completed your first university degree in the performing arts field by the time you begin your scholarship-supported study programme.
- If you are enrolled in a Master's or postgraduate degree programme that includes a study term abroad, you will normally only be able to obtain funding for this period abroad if you meet the following criteria:
- The study visit is required to meet the scholarship goal; it does not take place in the applicant's home country and lasts no more than one-quarter of the scholarship period. Longer periods of time cannot be funded, even partially.
- At the time of the application deadline, your university degree should not be more than 6 years old.
- If you have lived in Germany for more than 15 months at the time of application, you are ineligible.
- Applicants for drama and direction should have a good to exceptional command of the German language; applicants for musicals, performance studies, dance, and choreography should have a basic knowledge of German as well as a good command of the English language.

Selection Process of DAAD 2023/2024 Scholarship
- Candidates meet the necessary academic requirements and are expected to complete a study programme in Germany (above-average result for first academic exam – top performance third, language skills).
- Candidates must hold a Bachelor's degree (typically a four-year programme) in an appropriate subject.
- Candidates who are applying DAAD scholarship Program must have a minimum of two years of professional experience.
- Candidates who are applying DAAD scholarship Program must demonstrate that their motivation is development-related, and they will be expected to take on social responsibility and initiate and support change processes in their personal and professional environments following Candidates' training/scholarship.
What conditions must be fulfilled for DAAD 2023/2024 Scholarship?
The Common Scholarship Recipient
- works in a developing country for a public authority, a state, a private company, or both, and as such is involved in planning and carrying out projects and directives with a focus on development policies affecting technological, economic, or social areas.
- has completed a four-year Bachelor's degree programme in a related field.
- has, at the time of application, earned a bachelor's degree with significantly above-average grades (upper third) and at least two years of relevant professional experience.
- His or her academic credentials shouldn't be older than six years.
Applicants who were residing in Germany at the application deadline for more than 15 months will not be taken into consideration.
Language abilities
- Required for German study courses (scholarship includes a 6-month preparatory German language course in Germany): passing the language test DSH 2 or TestDaF 4 successfully prior to the start of the study programme. A current certificate must be provided as proof that the applicant has a minimum B1 level of German at the time of application.
Note: Even with the preceding six-month intensive course in Germany, it is not possible to pass the necessary German language courses (DSH or TestDaF) without any prior basic knowledge of the German language (at least B1 Level). A formal requirement for matriculation at the relevant German university is passing the language test.
- IELTS (Band 6) or TOEFL score is required for courses taught in English (minimum score: 550 paper based, 213 computer based, 80 internet based)
